Audience Feedback - First Draft Magazine Advertisement

Teacher's Feedback:
  • Make the font for the reviews smaller
  • Level out the reviews so they are together
  • Make the image of the girl bigger as there is a lot of empty space

Focus Group Feedback:

Amy
  • I like the use of the guitar as it links well to the music video
  • Having the same picture of the girl and her guitar is good as it is clear they are linked together
To improve-
  • It would be more interesting to have a more variation of colours

Rhiannon
  • The synergy between all three products is really clear
  • Having the main protagonist as the main focus is effective
To improve-
  • Maybe add more colour to be more eye catching

Ben
  • I like that it's really clear what it's all about
  • It looks really good as a product
To improve-
  • The girl needs to be more saturated

Joe
  • I like how the white font contrasts with the background
  • I like how a similar image is used for both the digipak and the advertisement

Audience Feedback - First Draft Album Digipak

Teacher's Feedback:
  • The background colour is too harsh
  • I like the back cover
  • I like the inside cover, it's very indie
To improve-
  • Include the track names on the back cover
  • Have another colour in the front cover to incorporate your music video
  • For the other inside cover, maybe have words

Focus Group Feedback:

Amy
  • The dark colours are very indie
  • I like the font for Fickle Friends
  • I like how you have the same font for Vanilla as the tracks on the back
To improve-
  • Add in more colour as it is only a plain black background with plain white text

Rhiannon
  • I like how the prop of the guitar is included to add synergy
  • The fonts are bold and work well together
  • It's simple but effective of the indie genre

Ben
  • It's really clear, which is good
  • It hasn't got a lot of colour so it is a bit dull and wouldn't catch my eye
To improve-
  • Add more colours to make it more interesting

Joe
  • I like how the background is completely black so there are no distractions
  • The brightness of the guitar stands out which is effective

Audience Feedback - Third Draft Music Promo

Teacher's Feedback
  • This is better
  • I like the change of pace in the performance part
  • Is that the right font?
  • Is the ending a bit slow and the shot too long?
To improve-
  • Maybe include a slow zoom at the beginning of the performance part
  • For the typed email, maybe use the font you are using in your ancillary

Focus Group Feedback

Amy
  • I like the text on the screen because it made it more clear what was happening
  • I like how there are less coffee shop shots so there are more that actually relate to the song
  • The lip syncing was very good and in time and made it seem like the actress is singing
To improve-
  • You could colour grading to balance the shots -e.g: the shots in the field are really sharp and bright compared to the shots in the bedroom. To make it easier on the eye between the two different shots
  • I think that you could have more interesting transitions, such as cutting on the beat
Rhiannon
  • I love the use of the diegetic sound at the beginning
  • I like that there are more shots of her playing guitar
To improve-
  • More performance shots would be good

Ben
  • It fits the music really well
  • It tells a good story
To improve-
  •  Have text when she gets the email in the coffee shop so it is easy to understand the message of the email

Joe
  • I like the text and how it was like it was typing
  • I like the more shots of her playing guitar

From this feedback, we now need to:
  • Change the ending so that it is less abrupt - relate it to RMAs
  • Change the font for the typed email to relate it to the ancillaries
  • Add more interesting transitions
  • Colour grade the shots so that they flow together better

Audience Feedback - Second Draft Music Promo

Teacher's Feedback:

  • I like the improvements and the narrative is a bit clearer now
  • I like the sound before it starts - could you include the noise of typing on the phone? You would need to make it subtle
  • Lip syncing needs a bit of work
To improve-
  • The ending is a little abrupt. You could go back to your RMAs and see how they finish
  • I think that you could make the confirmation email clearer towards the end.

Focus Group Feedback:

Amy
  • I like the shots with the more lip syncing
  • I really like the pan shot of her playing the guitar, and the pan shot of her writing lyrics
  • I love the shots of her performing the song - the lip syncing and the matching to the song
To improve-
  • Between the performance and the final part of the music video, you could have strobe flashing images to cut in time with the drums to transition - either with one of the shots or both

Rhiannon
  • I really love it- I think the narrative is clear and if I hadn't have known the story I would have understood it
  • I love the lip syncing section with the colourful lighting - it appeared very indie and alternative, and added a nice performance element to the video, and looks very visually pleasing
To improve-
  • I think there may be a few too many shots of closing the laptop and putting it away, because it becomes slightly repetitive
  • There are certain sections where the lip syncing is perhaps slightly out of time with the music
  • Maybe have less shots of her taking off coats and putting jumpers on

Ben
  • The music was not totally in sync with the lips
  • I think its good overall
  • I like that you know her goal
To improve-
  •  Improve the lip syncing part so they are synced

Joe
  • I like the new shots of the guitar and lip syncing
  • The changes in shots flowed well, they weren't all over the place
To improve-
  •  In the email at the end, she spelled 'opportunity' wrong

From this feedback, we now need to:
  • Fix the ending so that it flows better and finishes less abruptly
  • Go back to the lip syncing parts and make sure they match the timing of the lyrics
  • Take out some of the shots of her putting on and taking off her coat and replace with more shots of her playing guitar and writing lyrics
  • Include ambient sound of typing at the beginning of the video

Audience Feedback - First Draft Music Promo

Teacher's Feedback

  • Add slow motion
  • Have different transitions between different locations
  • Some of the shots are too long
  • The wardrobe shot is too long & too dark
  • Try different speeds and lengths
  • Storyline is clear & makes sense
  • Some shots are too static
  • Shot sizes need to change
  • Change order of shots, from long to close
  • In time with song - lip syncing, song writing & guitar playing
  • I like the swaying of the camera in the performance part
  • The camera shots and lighting are good in this part
  • The shots of her singing are really good - lip syncing is good
  • It's got really good elements to it
  • I like the concept
  • The way the video is structured is very linear

To improve:

  • Include audio in beginning shots before music starts
  • Have a close up shot of rejection email to make it clear - I can't read them
  • Nice locations, but it's too flat so intersperse them
  • Film shots of emails in better lighting and make the shots stable
  • Have tighter close up shots of her in her room & fragmented shots to keep it interesting

Focus Group Feedback

Amy
  • The lip syncing in the performance part is really good
  • I like the mirror shots - they're well framed
  • I like the dog shots
To improve:
  • I think the last shot of the performance part may have been out of sync
  • The shot when she leaves the bedroom is a bit confusing as it looks like she's saying bye to someone

Rhiannon
  • I love the lip syncing shots with the lighting
  • The ending shots are very good
  • I don't think the narrative is 100% clear as there is a few unnecessary shots of her eating which confuses the narrative a bit
To improve:
  • The beginning of the video needs some diegetic sound as it is silent, and then the music starts really abruptly

Ben
  • I like how it finishes with the start of the song
  • At the end I wasn't sure if she was actually performing or if it was a dream
  • I like it
To improve:
  • Have more meaningful shots during the long black pauses

Joe
  • The best part was the dog interaction as it was cute but genuine
  • In the lip syncing part I really like the lighting - it draws attention to her - very edgy
To improve:
  • When she turns around after leaving the bedroom, it does look like she's saying bye to someone, it's a bit confusing

From this feedback, we now need to:
  • Plan more shots of her playing the guitar
  • More shots showing the process of her writing the song - throwing paper of lyrics into bin?
  • Refilm shots of emails to make them clearer to read
  • Include audio of beginning shots
  • Film more close up shots of her in her room

Focus Group Feedback - Magazine Advertisements

My partner and I both decided to use this design as for our final magazine advertisement, as it is simple, but still effective for our genre. The brightly coloured vanilla flowers as the background is part of the synergy linked with our album digipak cover, as this is important for a production. The photo of her holding her guitar is also significant to the narrative storyline of our music promo.

Amy:
  • I like the use of two different type faces that contrast eachother
  • I like the vanilla flowers because of the continuity
  • I like how the prop of the guitar is included in it as it is in the video as well

Rhiannon:
  • I really like it, it's bold and stands out
  • I like the bold type face of 'Vanilla'
  • I like how the photo contrasts with the background
To improve-
  • The 'Fickle Friends' needs to be bolder

Ben:
  • The leaves are nice and colourful
  • The text is nice and big, and it's obvious what it is
To improve-
  • The leaves in the background distract you from the girl. If you were to include them, have them less bright, and the origin to be from the girl, as they are all over the place.

Joe:
  • I like how the bold font stands out
  • I like how the repetitive pattern in the background contrasts with the darker text
To improve-

  • The text at the bottom is hard to read, so try to make it bolder. But I do like the contrast between bold text and handwritten font

Focus Group Feedback - Album Digipaks

Out of all of our initial ideas, my partner and I agreed that this design is the one we wanted to develop and use as our final, as it links to our genre, as well as fitting with the theme Fickle Friends use for their album covers.

We asked our focus group for their feedback so that we could improve the final product to the the best it could be:

Amy:
  • I like the outline of the font - it's more interesting and not plain
  • I like how you have the front of the flower on the front cover, and the back of the flower on the back cover
To improve-
  • Have an actual photo rather than a drawing

Rhiannon:
  • I like how there is a clear link between the poster and the digipak
  • The bold colours are very effective

Ben:
  • I like the colours, they are very bright and grab your attention
  • They're easy to read, which is good
  • The design is very simple and nice

Joe:
  • I like the cursive font as it is bold so doesn't get lost on the cover
  • The links between the digipak and magazine advertisement are clear but also aren't too simplistic

Audience Feedback on First Draft Animatic Storyboard

Teacher's Feedback:

  • I quite like the slow shots when shes singing - you could do a slow zoom
  • The locations work well
  • There is a clear narrative - and its relatable to the audience
  • It's an original idea
To improve:
  • The camera work needs to me more creative - its more flat
  • The main idea is good - the execution needs improvement
  • The pace is too slow

Focus Group

Amy:
  • It had a good length of clips - not too long
  • It had a variety of different shot sizes
To improve:
  • On the drum beat, you could have a number of shots in quick succession
  • Throughout the song, you should have cuts that are in time with the beat

Rhiannon:
  • I really really like the overall narrative of the music video and its pace.
  • The pace isn't too fast, which allows it to focus on the protagonist and their story, but also quick enough to keep you on your toes
  • I really loved it
To improve:
  • Some shots are repeated a couple of times, which can be a bit repetitive

Ben:
  • It was really good
  • It goes well with the song, which is the best part about it
To improve:
  • Make it more clear what is happening, as it is quite difficult to understand at first

Joe:
  • I liked the over the shoulder shot looking at the dog in particular as it is an aesthetically pleasing angle
  • I enjoyed it
  • I felt that it was a good pace as the song wasn't that fast

Audience Feedback on Pitch

Audience Feedback

  • I like the shots where it goes really fast as it creates differentiation from your other shot duration's and makes the video more engaging
  • Good pace- keeps people engaged and want to watch more
  • I really like the concept of the smoke flares and how you have made the colours a continuous link throughout your main and ancillary task, its a subtle connection that creates good links
To improve-
  • Maybe include a bigger variety of shot types to show off more skills and knowledge
  • Smoke flares could appear more repetitive if they are shown at all choruses, try and link of a way to break that down - lip syncing, for example

Target Audience Research

To confirm what age range my music promo should be aimed at, I conducted a questionnaire whereby I asked many people, both male and female, of a range of ages if they listened to alternative indie music.

I asked the following four questions:

  • Do you enjoy watching music videos?
  • How often do you watch music videos?
  • What is your favourite genre of music?
  • More specifically, do you listen to alternative genre music?

I displayed the responses in tables and pie charts to clearly see what age ranges would be best to use as my target demographic:

To narrow my findings, I made another pie chart for question 1 and 4, specifically focusing on ages:

Question 1 ~

Question 4 ~

Overall, these made it clear that the people who answered 'yes' and 'sometimes' were commonly in the age range of 16 - 24. Therefore, I found that this age would be who I would target for my music promo.
